              1)  Stop automatic conversion to border lines
              2)  Stop automatic conversion of regular quotes to smart quotes
              3)  Stop automatic conversion of regular dashes to em dashes

The following extra helpful hints were taken from the volunteer blog and are suggested settings by Bookshare staff for your MS Word program.  You will only need to do this once on your computer, and it will customize your Word program to change some settings to make it more compatible with proofreading for Bookshare.

1)  Stop automatic conversion to border lines

      A.  Go to the  Tools  menu  (short cut  =  alt + t),

      B.  Click on  AutoCorrect Options,

      C.  Click on the tab  AutoFormat As You Type,

      D.  Uncheck the box labeled  Border Lines.

Now, Word will no longer automatically convert asterisks (and equal signs, dashes, etc.) to lines
      (or to borders).

2)  Stop automatic conversion of regular quotes to smart quotes

      A.  Go to the  Tools  menu,

      B.  Click on  AutoCorrect Options,

      C.  Click on the tab  AutoFormat,

      D.  Uncheck  Straight quotes with smart quotes.
