4.2  C.  7.  Hyphens  (aka Dashes)

Back to:  4. Proofread a Book

              1)  Reconnect hyphenated words that are broken across two pages
              2)  Remove spaces before and after hyphens and m-dashes
              3)  The RTF Converter will replace M-dashes with 2 hyphens

1)  Reconnect hyphenated words that are broken across two pages

     A.  When the last word on a page is hyphenated, please reconnect the two pieces:
          -  Cut the last part of the word on the second page, and
          -  Paste it to the first part of the word on the first page.

     B.  How to search for hyphenated words that are broken across two pages

          i.  Go to the very beginning of the file by doing a:
                   Ctrl  +  Home

ii.  Bring up the Find dialog by doing a:
                   Ctrl  +  f

iii.  In the Find what box type:
                   -^p

              (a dash, a caret, then a lower case letter  'p' )
The caret and lower case letter p are the symbols in Word for a paragraph mark.

iv.  Click Find Next to view each instance and correct if necessary.
               -  Doing this search will find some things that are not "hyphenated words broken across
two pages", but usually there will not be many false hits.
               -  Doing this search will only find instances where the OCR has put in the dash.
               -  One cannot do a global replace.

     C.  Sometimes the hyphen will be missing from a hyphenated word that is broken across two pages.
These are more difficult to find.  Please look for these and reconnect these, too.

2)  Remove spaces before and after hyphens, and m-dashes

This is done so that hyphens will comply with literary Braille code.

     A.  Remove a space after a single hyphen.
The OCR software often mistakenly puts a space after a single hyphen.
          Please remove the space.

     B.  Remove spaces before and after instances of 2 hyphens in a row.

     C.  Remove spaces before and after m-dashes.

3)  The RTF Converter will replace M-dashes with 2 hyphens

An m-dash is a character that looks like a very long dash.

You don't need to "replace m-dashes with 2 hyphens" because Bookshare's software
(the RTF Converter) will do exactly this, immediately after you upload your finished proof.
