4.2  C.  4.  Blank pages, Manual line breaks, Paragraphs between speakers

Back to:  4. Proofread a Book

              1)  Blank pages
              2)  Manual line breaks
              3)  Paragraphs between speakers

1)  Blank pages

      A.  Don't delete any blank pages.

      B.  Give every blank page a page number just as with any other page in the book.

      C.  Label each blank page using square brackets:

       [BLANK PAGE]

       An example in context:

      ....................................... Page Break .......................................
4                          <<  this is the page number

       [BLANK PAGE]
       ....................................... Page Break .......................................

2)  Manual line breaks

      A.  Sometimes Manual Line Breaks occur at the end of every line, consecutively for 5 or 10 lines.
           Each must be fixed individually.

      B.  Find Manual Line Breaks by searching on:
               ^l
(a caret, then a lower case letter 'L')

           1.  When the author intends a paragraph to exist:
                -  Replace each Line Break with a Paragraph Mark.

           2.  When the end of a paragraph is not intended and the OCR has put in a Manual Line Break
                instead of a space:
                -  Replace the Manual Line Break with 1 space.

      C.  Below is a small picture of a Manual Line Break, which can only be seen when Show / Hide is
           turned on.

4.2 B. 4. 1_Screenshot of one MANUAL LINE BREAK which resembles a bent arrow.

3)  Paragraphs between speakers

      1)  Unfortunately, even today's best OCR programs often make this mistake.

The following should be 2 lines, not 1, so that this:
                "Did to!" "Did not!"

           Becomes this:
                "Did to!"
                "Did not!"

      2)  Search for these and replace each instance individually.
In other words, do not do a Global Replace!

           Search for:
                " "

(a double quote, a space, then a double quote)

Check each instance and if appropriate, Replace with:
                "^p"

(a double quote, a caret, a lower case letter 'p', then a double quote)
